Man hospitalized after hit-and-run in Lexington apartment parking lot
Friends say driver swerved into motorcyclist before fleeing
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - A man is recovering in the hospital after Lexington police say he was hit by a car in the parking lot of the Lex Apartments on South Broadway.
Lexington police say they responded to a hit-and-run just after midnight Thursday.
What witnesses say happened
Zach Dailey and Michael Shumate were riding their motorcycles around midnight Thursday when Shumate says a driver cut them off when they were turning from South Boulevard onto Oliver Lewis Way.
“He tried to brake check us. And he swerved into the, to the left to try to miss the car… and that was when the guy decided to just rip the steering wheel left and just wreck into my friend, Zach,” Shumate said.
Shumate says they then followed the driver into a nearby parking lot to try to get the driver’s contact information.
“Next thing I know, he’s driving fast towards both of us. He knocks my bike over in the process. And then he hit my friend Zach,” Shumate said.
WKYT obtained surveillance video from a nearby business showing what happened. The car appears to leave the parking lot, then circle back around and drive towards Dailey and Shumate. WKYT is choosing not to show the moment the car hits Dailey. Ambulances arrived moments later.
“It was the most horrific thing I think I’ve ever seen in my life. That’s just not something that you should do to anyone. And, nobody deserves that ever,” Shumate said.
Injuries and recovery
Dailey was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
“So there’s like 10 broken ribs. A broken nose. His shoulder is fractured in like two spots. Six stitches in the other arm,” friend Danni M. said.
Dailey is the owner of a car repair shop. Friends say they don’t know when he’ll be able to recover.
“You can’t just run somebody over like that and change their whole life. I mean, he can’t work either,” friend Felipe Sanchez said.
“I know he’s going to have a long journey ahead. But he needs all the support that he can get. And, you know, me, my friends, his family, we’re going to do the best that we can to be there for him,” Shumate said.
Search for driver continues
Lexington police say they are still searching for the driver of the car. Anyone with information is asked to call Lexington police.
A GoFundMe has been set up to help the victim.
